About the Book
The Door Left Open is a letter before it is anything else. The author is a Catholic, a husband, a father, and a brother; the people it is written to are his own family, who encountered a famous series of online lectures and came to believe the Church of their childhood was prophecy’s villain.
The book answers that story the only way its author believes an honest answer can be made: by testing the claims. The prophet is tested by the Bible’s own tests for a prophet. The doctrines are tested against the whole of Scripture, quoted from the King James Version throughout. The famous “Catholic admission” quotations are checked word by word against their sources. And the standard cuts both ways: where a claim against the Church is genuine, the book says so plainly, and every concession honesty demands is made on the page.
Five promises govern every chapter: sources named at their own level, official Adventist doctrine stated from current denominational sources, Ellen G. White quoted from her published writings and the White Estate, and individual speakers attributed to themselves; every quotation carrying its citation so the reader can check it; Scripture from the KJV; every text read in its context; and no guessing at anyone’s motives, ever. The verse over the whole book is one Adventists love, which is why it was chosen: “To the law and to the testimony” (Isaiah 8:20).
