About the Author
E. C. Kayrouz is a Catholic, a husband, a father, and a brother, and it is the last of those words that explains the book. He is not a theologian, a historian, or a professional apologist, and the book says so on its first page.
His family’s faith comes from the mountains of northern Lebanon, from the valley where monks have prayed in cliff-cut monasteries for more than a thousand years. The family crossed the world to Australia and raised its children on the faith it carried from that valley.
Years later, an online tribute posted in love led part of the family, by the algorithm’s logic, into a series of lectures that taught them to see the Church of their childhood as prophecy’s enemy. The Door Left Open is his answer: not an attack on the people he loves, but a testing of the claims that took them, by the standard both sides confess, “to the law and to the testimony” (Isaiah 8:20).
He writes as a lay member of the Catholic Church; nothing in the book carries official endorsement, and responsibility for its arguments, and for its errors, is his alone. He would rather you check his work than take his word, and the book is built so that you can.
