This page says what this site collects about you and what happens to it. It is short because there is not much to tell.
The email list. If you sign up for book news, your email address is stored with our mailing-list provider, Kit, which receives and holds it in order to send the emails you asked for. The sequence is exactly what the signup form says: you sign up, one confirmation email arrives to make sure the address is really yours, then only the rare note when there is real book news; that is all it will ever carry. Your address is never sold or traded, and it is disclosed only to the service provider that operates the mailing list. Every email carries an unsubscribe link; unsubscribing stops all mailings. Unsubscribing and erasure are different operations: if you want your address deleted from the provider entirely, write via the contact page and it will be.
The contact form. The form on the corrections page collects a message, an email address, and a name if you choose to give one. Submissions go to the author’s private inbox and are used only to reply to you and to act on what you reported. Correspondence is kept only as long as it is needed for that purpose and then deleted; where a report leads to a public correction, the record of the correction is kept, not your correspondence. Deletion on request, subject to any legal requirement to retain.
Visiting the site. Like almost every website, the server keeps standard technical logs (such as pages requested and approximate region) for security and to keep the site working; they are kept for a short fixed period and then deleted. The site also uses Google Analytics to see which pages are read and which questions bring readers here. It sets Google’s analytics cookies in your browser and sends Google the pages you visit, a random identifier for your browser, and your approximate region; Google holds that data under its own privacy policy, and this site keeps it for fourteen months. Where you arrive from one of this book’s own search advertisements on Google, the same tool tells Google Ads that the click led to a page being read, so the author can see whether the advertising earns its cost. That is the whole of it. No advertising is shown on this site, nothing is used to build a profile of you or to follow you to other sites, and nothing is sold. If you would rather not be counted, Google’s browser opt-out add-on or any cookie blocker stops the analytics cookies, and the site works exactly the same.
Buying the book. Purchases happen on retailers’ own websites under their own privacy policies; this site never sees your payment details.
